Coloring Book Workshop

Clark University January 2007

Have you ever wanted the chance to turn Rapunzel into a national football hero? Hercules into a world-class jazzercizer? Make Bert and Ernie their very own queen-size bed that they actually get to sleep in together? Now's your chance! Let the synthesis of your feminist sensibilities and all the fairy tales that have hurt your feelings bring your imagination and creativity to a whole new level. Come hang out with other boys who always wanted to be the Little Mermaid, women who engineer dare-devil rollercoasters, and everyone in between.

These workshops are akin to spending an hour and a half in the arts and crafts cabin at your favorite summer camp. Using found images from popular and unpopular children's media, you will transform these ordinary images into a subversive coloring book, writing new scripts for the story book characters you always wanted to rise up and rebel against, but never had the tools to do. Now you can set them free! The pages you create will be combined with the other participants' pages, creating a collectively-made coloring book. Each participant will later receive a copy of the book!

Hundreds of these D.I.Y. (Do-It-Yourself) coloring books exist around the country as Jacinta has left behind a trail of inspiration in every place she's traveled. Don't miss the chance to make friends, cut-n-paste with a real live gluestick, and change the direction of children's media. No longer will there be a shocking lack of narratives for gender outlaws! We will make truths to set people free. No artistic experience necessary.

Jacinta has facilitated workshops in restaurants, collectives, middle schools, colleges, youth centers, front lawns, coffee shops, LGBTQ centers, and punk houses around the US and Canada.  She has toured with such illustrious groups of people as: Sparkle Kids Action Network, Gadabout Traveling Film Festival, Neko Case, Anne Elizabeth Moore, Liz Mason, Dave End, Julie Novak and Michael Truckpile.
